Google base and individual feeds for pod marketplaces
by Kanweienea Kreations on Sep.15, 2009, under Uncategorized
This has been discussed and marketplaces supposed to answer questions but yet they don’t. I was reading on www.podtoolbox.com forums that as of just a couple days ago people were still successfully submitting feeds. Since they had managed to do so, and it was only a couple days later (supposedly the new feed regulations were coming in effect on September 3rd), I figured ya know, I don’t know but I should try too. I just tried it and feed got disapproved. The feed has been working perfectly before so there was no error with the feed itself.
There was of course many discussions on the Google forums on the new marketplace policy as well. In one of them, Google forums discussion regarding new marketplace policy I read something quite interesting in regards to Cafepress.
Scarebaby said:
Google may not understand a number of important things about Cafepress shopkeepers, their shops, and their feeds. First of all, they may not understand that many shops are opted OUT of Cafepress’s feed, and therefore NO duplication would occur, since Cafepress should not be feeding those products at all. Second of all, Google may not understand that Cafepress does NOT feed all products. In fact, I currently have a feed going that shows over 100,000 of my Cafepress products. Cafepress itself includes only about 900 of my products in their feed. That’s a “duplication of products” rate of less than 1%. Third and MOST important, Google may not be aware that shopkeepers who sell products from the Cafepress marketplace (where now all feeds will originate from and point to) will receive only 10% of the sale of that product. In other words, a poster that sells for $9 in the marketplace earns me only 90 CENTS. If I sell it from my shop, however, it might earn me three or four times that much, since I am able to set my own markup in my shop.
I thought Google’s goal was to chronicle the world, and to offer EVERYTHING on the web on their site. This is a huge step backwards, and at the same time, it is a crushing blow for the small shopkeeper who is just trying to eke out a living. I know Google doesn’t want to be responsible for so many small business owners going under. We need to make them understand.
This may not just apply to Cafepress shopkeepers; it may apply to many many other people who earn a living on the internet. We need to be heard!
Yes, we do need to be heard. I tried to do an internet search for some other product upload site (as an alternative to google feeds). The only one I found was Bing product upload and it said it was being discontinued but to try their paid advertising, or in more words:
Thank you for your interest!
Dear Partner,
Thank you for your interest in the product upload beta. Regrettably, we are discontinuing this program.
Merchants located in the United States should consider participating in Bing cashback – an advertising program which combines the power of Bing with a comparison shopping engine to bring consumers some of the best deals on the web.
To get started with Bing cashback contact your account executive or fill out the interest form here: http://advertising.microsoft.com/advertising/cashback or check out http://www.bing.com/cashback

Hm, Cafepress is buggy today
by Kanweienea Kreations on Sep.15, 2009, under Uncategorized
Editing some products and sections and noticing they keep having errors on page. It mainly seems to be something wrong with one of their javascripts. Hopefully they will have it fixed soon. Pages are slow to load due to the error.
